Papua New Guinea

Today in class we learned about Papua New Guinea. They have an unemployment rate of 1.9% compared to the US which is 7.7% . They are the 12th fastest growing economy. Number one religion is Roman Catholic. There are 542 unpaved run ways and 20 paved run ways. They have an army and an Air Force. The legal age to get drafted is 16. And they have a potential 3 million soldiers if they ever went to war. 2.4 million cell phones are being used. 13% of the people live in urban areas. 3 main sports in the country are soccer, cricket, and rugby. Internet host 5,006 and Internet users are 125,000. 57.3 % are literate in Papua New Guinea and 42.7% are illiterate. Over 800 Languages are spoken . There are this any because of all the tribes there are in this country.

Jared Diamond

Jared Diamond was born in Boston Massachusetts on September 10th, 1937. He is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is also an author of many books. He studies in the fields of anthropology , geography , and another one that I forget . He has a PhD in Geography and Philosophy . He has gone on numerous expeditions. One of them including Papua , New Guinea . One if his books he wrote was Guns, Germs, and Steel. That was one of his books that was made into a movie. It was written by Jared Diamond in 1997. It was rewarded the pulitzer prize , which is the highest award given to an author.

Afghanistan

Gained Independence on August 19th,1919

In Afghan on December 1838 there was a war called the Two Anglo Afghan War. In the fourth and nineteenth centuries modern day Afghanistan was known as Khorasan. After the Third Anglo-Afghan war and the signing of the Treaty of Rawalpindi it became a fully independent state

Gained Independence on September 7th, 1822

On April 22nd, 1500 a Portuguese navigator named Pedro Alvares Cabral reached the shores of Brazil. The country got its name from "brazilwood" a redwood tree found along the coast. The king of Portuguese ruled Brazil before they gained indepenence.

France used to have a monarchy until the 1700's. King Louis XIV made France at the time the leading country in Europe. France's monarchy was destroyed after a war in 1789.

Germany was part of the thirty years war. Germany divided into numerous independent states called Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony. The northern states in Germany were protestant, and the southern states were catholic.

In the 20th century Mahatma Gandhi led millions of people to gain independence from Britain. European powers such as Portugal, Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom established trading posts in India. Later then they established colonies.

IRAN-


 Was founded in 625 BCE by the median empire. Iran achieved independence on April 1, 1979. Iran was ruled by empires. Iran did not have a stable government before 1979. Iran was always Iran, it was ruled by many empires through the years.


MEXICO-

Was ruled by spain until September 16th 1810, when Mexico acheived independence. In 1521 Spain conquered and colonized the territory now known has Mexico. The post independence period was characterized by economic instability, a civil war, two empires and a domestic dictatorship.







SAUDI ARABIA-

was never ruled by another empire. Was founded in 1932. Has been and absolute monarchy since its inception.

United Kingdom-
has never been ruled, but once ruled the world at one point in time. The sun never set on the Brittish empire. The United Kingdom once ruled America and many other countries.
 




Venzuala-
Was colonized by Spain in 1522. Venezuala gained independence in 1821. Was ruled by Spain. Venezuala had many indigidous peoples living. Before independence Many indigeous people lived here.

Today class started when I got to school. WE had a bomb threat today and first period was mostly an evacuation time for the police to search the school again with the dogs. We were supposed to have a test today but i guess because we had shorten classes because of the powder puff game at the end of the day he decided to postpone it until Friday. Mr. Schick asked us if we had questions to put on the test that we are having on Friday. Then we started asking him questions about the test. Since the classes were shorter , time went by really fast and class ended. That is what we did today in Human Geography.

Christianity

Christianity was founded around 30 AD, and in Jerusalem Israel. It is Monotheistic because there is only one god. Christians only believe there is only one god. There holy book that they use is called The Bible. This religion has 2.4 billion followers. The central figure of this religion is Jesus. It is mostly practiced in the western world; which is North America, Europe, & Oceania.

Islam

Islam was founded just after the year 1000. And where it was founded was on the west coast of Saudi Arabia. Islam is monotheistic because they only believe in one god . And they cant believe in more than one god because it is a sin. The holy book they use is called  The Quran. The religion has 1.4 to 1.67 followers. The central figure is Allah. It is mostly practiced in the middle east.

Buddhism

Buddhism was founded in the 4^th or 5^th century in Northern India. Buddhism is Monotheistic because they only believe in one god. The holy book is called the tipitaka. Buddhism has 365 million follower in the world today. The central figure is Buddha. It is mostly practiced in Tibet

Hinduism

No exact date or founder. Hinduism is monotheistic. The have lots of books that they use to worship. They have at least 900 million people following this religion. And there central figure is Brahman. It is mostly practiced in India.

today in class mr schick showed us a map of the US. It shiowed the different names the people call soda. it is amazing to see that in our own country some people do stuff differnet than others. we also talked about cultural geography. its pretty cool how if one person does something differnet others may soon follow. that is what we did in class today

Test today!

Today in Human Geography class we had a test today in the video we watched called "God grew tired of Us". And then after the test we looked up strange cultures and customs in the world.

How Can We Help?

Today in class we were in small groups. We were looking for what we could do to help kids in Africa that don't have a lot of money to buy things. One thing we found that helps was the shoe company called TOMS.  They have a program as when you buy a shoe they give one away to a child in need . that is a good program because lots of kids that are poor cant afford shoes and that is a good way of helping our world out today.

Did you know?

Today in class we watched a video on YouTube called "Did you know? " The video was about all the recent facts in the world today. Like one of the facts was that if Facebook was a country it would be the third largest country. And another fact was that China will soon be the number one country to speak English. Other then watching the video we talked about how Facebook can help us people out. Like some people said their sports teams have Facebook groups which the players and coaches join. That is an easy way to notify the players when practice is. The football team has a Facebook group also and i find it very convenient. And another thing some classmates said was that they use it to find out what homework was that day. I find that good and bad, the good thing is if you do actually forget to write it down you could chat someone in your class and they could easily tell you what the homework is. But the bad thing is that you could easily get distracted from focusing on your homework. which could cause problems with grades in the future. Well that is what we did today in Human geography class.

Real or Fake?

The first website that i clicked on seems legit. And same with the second one they are both well known resources. But for the third website, it was just typed out. it was very plain and nothing on the site looked legit. For the 4th website through the last website we had to choose were also very legit. NASA which was the 4th one was of course legit because it was the actually site they use. And CNN which was the 5th website was also legit because that is an actually news station that reports information through out the country. The 6th website which was The New York Times and the 7th website which was Fox News. they both are legit because they are both websites that give out information for us people. Wikipedia which is the 8th website is defiantly legit because it is one of the worlds largest encyclopedias.And last the 9th website which is your blog is also legit because we use it everyday adn it gives us the information we need for class.
